Mast Safe Technical Services To give “peace of mind” to any member of the public concerned about microwave emissions transmitted from the mast or antennae of any mobile phone operator. Mast Safe gives assurance, for example, to homeowners, by testing the intensity of microwave emissions. Even if their premises are next to an operators’ mast, by testing microwave emissions with the latest technological equipment, it can be discerned whether or not the microwave radiation conforms to the safety guidelines as set out by an international committee. Microwave emissions transmitted from the masts of mobile phone operators are a type of radiation known as “non-ionising” radiation. Ionised radiation is that which has sufficient energy to cause “ionisation” in materials (such as skin) through which it interacts. Ionised radiation has a greater energy than non-ionised radiation and imparts this energy to the substance that receives it. This means that at the molecular level there can be biological damage. Cancers, for example, can both be caused by, and be destroyed by, ionised radiation. |

Non-ionising radiation
(NIR), however, is the term given to that part of the
electromagnetic spectrum where there is insufficient quantum energy to cause ionisations (molecular damage) in living matter. NIR is found in static and power frequency fields (electricity pylons), in radio frequencies, microwaves (mobile phone masts), and in infra-red, visible and ultraviolet radiation. |

|
But what non-ionising
radiation can do, if it is transmitted with sufficient power, is
that it can cause harmful heating affects in human tissue (the
principle of the microwave oven). And even at low power, human
tissue is still absorbing the NIR. Scientists continue to debate whether health hazards such as leukaemia and cancer can be attributed to the prolonged exposure of low power, non-ionising radiation. |

|
What this means is
that international scientists have set out safety guidelines for public exposure to non-ionising radiation and Mast Safe tests premises according to these guidelines. There is no recognised statute or law in Britain which states that mobile phone operators must adhere to these international guidelines - the operators are governed by the general work regulations within the Health and Safety Act (1999). This means mobile phone operators are self-regulating. Mast safe is the only independent company (not allied to any operator) which can check whether any operator is transmitting beyond these guidelines because Mast Safe uses test equipment similar to that which the operators employ for their self-regulated tests.
